Ethiopian jazz by GiGi : Mengedegna with Tabla Beat Science

Music Television presents GiGi

This is a serious live jam session! One of my favorites, Ethiopian singer Ejigayehu “GiGi” Shibawbaw is not only a solo artist, she is like Phil Collins or Sting, for she is also part of a group known as Tabla Beat Science.

The video below is a live show with the GiGi and the band. Whilst GiGi was once labeled the best obscure artist of 2001 by NY Times music critic, as we enter 2011 she is much less obscure, thanks to  Palm Pictures which has released much of her material and YouTube which has made it more accessible.

Sharon Van Etten - For You

Sharron Van Etton is a organic pop artist signed to the indie label Language of Stone.

Issa Bogayogo - Toroya

The video below was made by a big fan of Issa Bogayogo whose YouTube handle is GuestFromTheWest. His story of why and how he made this video is below the video along with the English translation and of the lyrics are below. Enjoy!

Guest From The West's Story on how he made the video.
I was searching for a video to the song "Toroya" by Issa Bagayogo but couldn't find any. Therefore I sat down and after a complete night of fighting with Windows Movie Maker and a poor laptop I managed to get this together for all of you out there who like his music. Nothing special, just nice pictures of Africa.

I often go home by bike in the night after being in town and lately I've been putting on this song a lot while doing so. It's almost magic how the darkness around you can change just due to this song and how calm and relaxed one can feel. A big thanks goes out to you Issa for making all this beautiful music. When you're in my town show me up for a drink or two. My treat! ;)

If you like this song and/or want to support Issa go to his website which I added at the end of the video.

I finally stumbled over the lyrics and the meaning of Toroya. Toroya apparently means "suffering" in the Malian language and following is the English translation of the song itself.
The Malian to English Lyrics for Toroya

Toroya = Suffering

You only get out what you put in,
only work frees a person,
So, it is worth paying tribute,
to Malian artists,
to Malian youths,
to Malian women,
to Malian men who strive to improve their living condition

You only get out what you put in,
Work takes away from us vice, need and worries

You only get out what you put in,
let's pay tribute,
to the youths of Wassoulou,
to the youths of Karadougou,
to the youths of Briko,
to the youths of Ganadougou

You only get out what you put in,
welcome Moussa Koné,
welcome my charming guitarist Boua,
welcome Sidibé Mamou,
welcome Issa from Korin

A restless worker is always rewarded,
you only get out what you put in,
the sun shines again after the rain

Groove in Peace, Teena Marie

So sad to hear Teena Marie passed away today, so young, at age 54. She was a princess of modern music where soul met high energy funk and disco. Teena will always be remebered by me for her willingness to drop into random clubs and jam her ass off with random artists whom she never played with or with pals like Rick James, who is no doubt awaiting her arrival in heaven where a major jam is waiting.

Rubberbandits - Horse Outside.

On Bob Lefsetz blog, Lefsetz Letter, one of his readers refers Bob to check out this song below with the following message:
'From: Melinda Ortner
Subject: Rubberbandits - Horse Outside
1.5 mill views in a week, song all over Dublin right now. Don't think the states will catch on but who's to say."

Was not sure if the numbers were hype, and still not sure what this all means.

Hollie Smith delivers cool soul with her track entitled Will You Be The One

I remember the first time I heard Hollie Smith back in 2007 when I wrote about her as being a "Soul Girl For Real".

Not much has changed in the soul department for Hollie Smith. She is still serving it up, cool as a Kiwi can be with her track entitled Will You Be The One.

And, she is now signed to Blue Note Records Group's pop label known as Manhattan Records. Kudos goes out to Blue Note President Bruce Lundvall and Manhattan Records director, Ian Ralfini. GC

Brooke Fraser - Without You

posted by Gregory J. Chamberlain for MUSIC TELEVISION

At first glance, the cynical music critics of the world might dismiss Brooke Fraser as some manufactured goop, for she is perfectly gorgeous, many of her videos are flawlessly produced with all the accouterments of what superstar artists at major labels demand in their videos. And, the truth is, she is signed to a major label, but not in America. She is signed to Sony Music of New Zealand.

As I listen to this artist, she has really grown on me and I can't quite put my finger on why. I usually resist artists that are this perfect. It usually bugs me when there is no edge or something unique. But for some reason, I believe Brooke Fraser when she sings the songs which she has written. The songs are basic, stripped down, but they are polished. Polished songs usually piss me off. Not these, however. And, I admire that she is not letting all of her sex hang out. She is really great, has been at it for a long long time, for a girl in her later 20's. It works well for her and I really hope she gains more traction around the world as a serious contender of a recording artist, because that what she is.

10 year old R&B Crooner Nails It

posted by Gregory J. Chamberlain for MUSIC TELEVISION

My friend Sharla from high school posted this music video onto her Facebook page. It originated on YouTube a little over a year ago. It features a then 10 year old boy in South Africa who sings while playing an acoustic 6 string guitar which he treats as if it is a bass guitar, playing in a deliberate and precise way, showing that he understands R&B music, as he nails the vocals with sweet soul that would make Sam Cooke and Michael Jackson proud.

Jazmine Sullivan - 10 Seconds

Appantently, there are still some artists working their way into R&B Divahood, which is a good thing in my humble opinion. J Records artist, Jazmine Sullivan has "it" going on with her track entitled 10 Seconds.

Adele has a potential hit song with Rolling In The Deep

Posted by Gregory J. Chamberlain

Adele herself, describes the song posted below as a "dark bluesy gospel disco tune". The first time I heard it, it felt like something classic from another era. I could not quite put my finger on what era. There are hints of Elvis with a bit of country. Whatever it is, it's cool. It feels like a hit. Enjoy!

Tiffany Christopher and her song entitled For What

Came across an inspired up and coming singer/songwriter named Tiffany Christopher. This video is a bit toned down, compared to her energy in front of a lively crowd. Will keep digging for videos that capture the thing she does. If you hear she is performing live, you'll be happy you went.

Queen of the one take music video: Lisa Loeb and her song eititled Stay

Posted by Gregory J. Chamberlain for MUSIC TELEVISION

I was always impressed with Lisa Loeb's video for the song entitled Stay that launched her career. The video impressed me becuase it was shot in one take and had no edits when everyone else was cutting their videos as if cuts were all that mattered.

If Lisa Loeb is the queen of one take music videos, then Actor, Ethan Hawke is the king. Hawke was the one who actually directed this great gem of a video.

The song got it's chance when Hawke had given a demo for Stay to Ben Stiller, who used it in the end credits for the film, Reality Bites. It eneded up on the soundtrack for the film and then on the #1 position of the HOT 100 chart, making Loeb the only person to top that coveted position without a record contract. Hawk then made the video which basically had no budget and shot it in one take, the biggest reason I like this video.

Cree Summer and her song entitled Savior Self.

Posted by Gregory J. Chamberlain

Cree Summer is a recording artist who, several years ago, released a song entitled Savior Self, which never was released by her record label at that time, Capital Records. This is a song that is very moving and depending upon your mood and life experience, could take you up, down or all around. The song is beautiful and timeless. The video is a work of art. In my humble opinion it is one of the finest all around music videos I have ever seen.

Nneka - One of the hottest rising and truly global artists out there.

I had the privilege of meeting and chatting with one of my most favorite artists who I first heard back in early 2009 (read my Jan 2009 review) and immediately loved, musically. Her name is Nneka.

She and her music is political with depth. Nneka may not name names, but the political culprits she does sings of must know who they are. She does not mince words!

Nneka and her music has a activist substance that reminds me of few others, except for Bob Marley,

Her music has incredible edge, passion and truth at it's core. Enjoy! Peace Love Groove, GC

Esperanza Spalding - A True Pure Jazz Heartist

MusicTelevision.Com presents Esperanza Spalding

You may have already seen her on The Late Show with David Letterman and she has been in thousands of places between here and there, even playing for heads of state and President Obama. But in this big bad world, artists who travel that wide can still remain too far under the radar. This is just one more little venue for this inspired and gifted jazz bassist and vocalist.

Esperanza Spalding is a breath of fresh air. As a bassist myself, I appreciate any upright players who can sing and play upright at the same time. Esperanza is as sweet and beautiful as she is articulate with her vocals and jazz stylings, as you will see in this local CBS TV interview and performance on a show called The Second Cup Café. Enjoy!
