Moves like Jagger

posted by Gregory J. Chamberlain

Had no idea who the band was when this video started. The first 32 seconds of the video was NO music. I was about to click the NEXT button and Mick Jagger appears on the screen in B&W vintage footage, being asked "How much longer will you be doing this?".

Maroon 5 may have pumped out a lame sounding track with a cheesy over glam cameo of Christina Aguilera belting out a few lines, but the video is fun.

I hate to sound all critical and crotchety. Hope this is construed as constructive. Aguilera should go super natural and leave all the fancy hair & makeup bullshit behind. She is kind of doing what prostitutes are trying to look like. It's like Bad Vagas overdone. She should strip herself raw and regain a natural essence and get into THE MUSIC on a deeper level. Have heard her sing when she was in the moment and she is fantastic in an undeniable way. But lately, with the over glam and the music that's not in the moment, she has watered her soul down. It's like a tired formula that needs a change. She needs to get more comfortable being dressed down. Without all that, she is a super natural beauty. She needs to get into naturally glowing, and being seen that way, without all that shit. Shave her head and grow her hair out natural, from scratch. Eat super foods and live optimal and take her music back. If she did organic soul, using the kind of band Joss Stone used on her first record, Christina Aguilera would most likely excite me and a hell of a lot of other people again.

And, Maroon 5 should get away from this sound.

What made this song cool was Mick Jagger being in it. But he is not singing. I want Mick Jagger singing. Can't wait to see

Hear tracks from The Rolling Stones album entitled Some Girls :) But, notice the scathing review about the remastered tracks. Not all MP3's are created equal either. MP3's of bad remastering jobs are going to suck too! It's an interesting read at the link below.

Gaby Moreno - Stripped bare and raw, three great Illustrated Songs live.

I love Gaby Moreno so much. Her music is just wonderful! She plays in everything from full blown electric rock bands all the way down to keeping it simple, unplugged and acoustic. She jumps from from English to Spanish songs as she crosses genres with grace and style.

Below is a recent 2011 performance of Gaby Moreno on NPR Music's Tiny Desk Concert with her friend Adam Levy sitting with her on guitar. She performs three original songs, all so sweet and captivating, finishing with a song she wrote titled Sing Me Life which is sort of a call to arms to not let outside powers rule ones world. It got my mind wandering the way great songs do. The studio version is great too and has a tasty feel and production. Actually her entire record, Illustrated Songs, is like that. Enjoy! GC

***Gaby Moreno update: Since this post was originally posted in August of 2011, Gaby has transcended beyond "indie" status when she was signed to Metamorfosis‎ Records in March of 2012. In November, 2013, Gaby won the Latin Grammy in the category for Best New Artist, something the MusicTelevision.Com Family had proclaimed several times prior to that as far back as 2006 :)

When I was just a kid in the 1970's, my mom had a 8 track tape of Deodato that was all instrumental and it was cool. It was like a quiet storm kind of contemporary jazz that I played over and over. Typed Deodato's name into YouTube and here is one of the tracks from that record! Enjoy! GC

What's wrong with the U.S. Government. This is not a question.

posted by Gregory J. Chamberlain

Gibson Guitar Corp. Responds to Federal Raid.

This appears to be just one more thing that is wrong with the U.S. Government, in my humble opinion. I do not have all the facts, with regard to this case, but what happened to Gibson almost seems typical of the Barney Fife style actions of the Federal Government.

A Gibson Guitar Corp. Press Release stated the following:
Henry Juszkiewicz, Chairman and CEO of Gibson Guitar Corp., has responded to the August 24 raid of Gibson facilities in Nashville and Memphis by the Federal Government. In a press release, Juszkiewicz said: "Gibson is innocent and will fight to protect its rights. Gibson has complied with foreign laws and believes it is innocent of ANY wrong doing. We will fight aggressively to prove our innocence."

Starar Band - RolePlay

Every day I scour through dozens of e-mails from random people many of whom are the artists themselves, with leads on songs listen to for possible inclusion here. I really appreciate the artists, who over time, consistently improve and seem to never stop putting out new and original songs.

Here is a band that felt kind of generic to me when I first heard it a long time ago. But over time, I have come to appreciate them for the fact that they never let up. They keep writing songs, posting them on youtube and each time, I hear improvements in the recordings and their videos seem to get better. The vocalist has a bit of Olivia Newton John living inside of her and it's not hard to figure out she is authentically sweet. Today, I received a e-mail from the group about their latest track and I thought they are really finally getting somewhere. It's a really long road, that old DIY Highway, and it seems they are riding on it and enjoying every mile. GC

Ayo - I'm Gonna Dance

I will never forget the first time I heard Ayo and how stoked I was. I posted her song entitled Life is Real and blogged about it here:

I just can't get enough of this artist. She is from Lagos Nigeria, but lives all over the world. Germany, France, the U.S. and other places. She is amazing in her own way and it surprises me that she is not more well known.

This song was released early in France in early 2011 and will probably not be released or promoted in the U.S. Thanks to YouTube, enjoy it wherever you are! - Peace Love Groove, GC

Nustrat Fateh Ali Khan - Mustt mustt

Posted by Gregory J. Chamberlain

Love the sound and passion coming from this Pakistani artist, Nustrat Feteh Ali Khan, who died on August 16, 1997. But his music is world renowned and lives on. All three of these versions of Nustrat Fateh Ali Khan's song entitled "Mustt mustt" rolls out it's own idea of soul that Nustrat, his group and audiences all ride like a magic carpet. His genre of music is considered to be Qawwali, the devotional music of the Sufis, a tradition within Islam. Enjoy!

Jimi Hendrix - Foxy Lady - Live at Rainbow Bridge

Rainbow Bridge is a 1972 film directed by Chuck Wein that features footage from a Jimi Hendrix concert, and a short piece of conversation between Pat Hartley, Wein and Hendrix. It was mainly financed by Hendrix manager Mike Jeffery, hence his appearance. The film is about Pat Hartley's "spiritual awakening" via a visit to the 'Rainbow Bridge' planetary meditation cult on Maui, where, as part of the proceedings Jimi Hendrix visits to play a concert during a 'Rainbow Bridge' mass meditation/colour/sound "experiment". The "Rainbow Bridge" concert was a free concert by Jimi Hendrix that was held on July 30, 1970, in a horse pasture above Seabury Hall, on the "Upcountry" slopes of Haleakala, the volcano that makes up 75% of the island of Maui, Hawaii, although it probably last erupted in the 17th century, it is officially considered as being active.

A modest audience of a few hundred island hippies, surfers, and students turned up following announcements that Hendrix would play a free concert for a film. Hendrix was also in Hawaii to play the last concert on his 'Cry of Love' tour with his reformed 'Jimi Hendrix Experience' (with Billy Cox replacing Noel Redding on bass & backing vocals. Mitch Mitchell & Cox were also previously members of Gypsy Sun and Rainbows). The director Chuck Wein introduced Hendrix' performance (no mention of a group name) as the driving force of this 'Rainbow Bridge' "experiment" , (this title is often mistaken as being the name of the site of this concert rather than the name of this "Planetary meditation" cult, an extension of the Gaia hypothesis into spiritual realms). The original cut, not surprisingly used very little of the concert footage, as this was not intended to be a concert film and no music from the performance was released on the official Reprise LP "Rainbow Bridge- Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" for contractual reasons and due to the original music soundtrack being unreleasable due to its very substandard sonic quality on account of strong winds that day. The album does include, however, the studio tracks featured in the film. However, the music from the concert was distributed as a bootleg recording for three decades, before Radioactive Records released this same bootleg recording on the 2003 album, The Rainbow Bridge Concert: The Early Show until it was withdrawn due to a court action by 'Experience Hendrix' which makes this officially a 'bootleg' CD release. The 'Rainbow Bridge' concert was the penultimate performance by Hendrix in the United States, his last was two days later on August 1, 1970, in Honolulu, Hawaii. Hendrix died less than two months later on September 18, 1970 in London, England

Fever Ray - When I Grow Up

I feel so lame when I see a (supposedly) new video that just blows me away, only to find the song has been out there for years and I missed it until now.

I instantly fell in love with this song by Fever Ray, the Swedish electronic artist whose real name is Karin Dreijer Andersson. The second the I heard her unique voice I was glued. Together with the video, it's exceptional. Granted, the song was turned up to about 8.5 with a nice little audio system... and the vid was set to full screen.

Hollie Smith - I Will Do

First wrote about Hollie Smith in 2007 and named her Soul Girl For Real. Have been following her as closely as possible ever since. Hollie Smith is a native New Zealander and has not had enough momentum in the U.S.A. to take her into a global artist catagory where she is worthy to be a member of. in my humble opinion. Her early soul tracks reminded me of the kind of songs I like of Mary J. Blige early in her career and those who are fans of artists like Blige might really like Smith. GC
