As we hit the end of 2013, we have spent these final weeks planning what 2014 is going to be about.

What is the plan for Music Television exactly?

This channel and it's affilates such as The Indies, MusicLoad, The Quiet Storm, and Classic Music Television is about genuine authentic artists who we have focused on year after year... Artists like Gaby Moreno, who this year was finally recognized as "Best New Artist" when she won that Latin Grammy in 2013. And, this channel is about artists of substance like Nneka, perhaps the closest thing to a modern day living female Bob Marley. And Trixie Whitley, whose song Breathe You In My Dreams should be considered song of the year by any and all music organizations worth a darn. Fantastic organic groups like SHEL is what this company is about. Great pop/rock groups like Saucy Monky and amazing artists like Dom La Nena. And, there is no way I can forget to mention the fabulous Lianne La Havas.... Sorry I can't think of any male artists or groups to plug at this moment. Perhaps this was the year of the great female artists!

Happy New Year! GC

Blind Faith - Live at London's Hyde Park - June 7, 1969

MusicTelevision.Com presents Blind Faith
The Original Blind Faith Record Cover

The history of Blind Faith, that featured Steve WinwoodEric ClaptonGinger Baker and Rick Grech, is a quick story. The group only released one record in 1969, and the group's self titled record shot to #1 in the U.S. airplay charts in August 1969, achieving platinum sales status, also hit #1 on the U.K. airplay charts in September of that year and achieved Gold sales status there.

The original cover, featured above, was banned in some countries and created a bit of social outrage in some corners, which did not hurt sales and made it more collectable when the record labels made changes to circumvent the bans.

Below are a few clips of Blind Faith's debut when they performed at a free concert in London's Hyde Park on June 7, 1969.

Chicago - America

MusicTelevision.Com presents Chicago and the music video to the song America

The man who is probably the most powerful player in the music business, Irving Azoff, re-tweeted: "Dear Congress, it's not just Chicago sayin' it...". The tweet was originally from the band Chicago who recently released a new song called America. In a time when too few artists and bands are attempting to embarrass politicians who have been fucking up our once great country that has become a arrogant war mongering, currency diluting, drone using, bomb dropping, paranoid, spying police state, it is great too see any attempt whatsoever to embarrass the culprits and encourage American people to actually do something. Never get enough of Trixie Whitley

Trixie Whitley - photo by Gregory J Chamberlain
Trixie Whitley - photo by Gregory J. Chamberlain
This is the latest Trixie Whitley music video to the 2nd track of her most recent 11 song record titled Forth Corner. The song is titled Never Enough.

It's sort of hard to pigeonhole a particular genre of music Whitley plays in. Her songs are more of a alternative pop/rock sound with all sorts of interesting electric guitar sounds. Her music has a certain intrinsic etherealness to it, that is all her own... it's original. Bubbling & brewing at the roots of the songwriting seems to be a soulfulness with a real syncopated funk. I wonder if a funk band will ever cover her songs? Regardless of everything, Whitley is an original with integrity, not clawing for fame, just keeping it real. She is one of my top 10 favorite emerging artists over the last few years. She has the kind of songs that grow on you, not always upon first listen. Da Kine Creeper :) GC

Sweet songs and music videos by Sheryl Crow

MusicTelevision.Com presents Sheryl Crow and her music videos

It's been just over 20 years since Sheryl Crow's debut solo album, Tuesday Night Music Club, was released. When the third single titled All I Wanna Do came out, it felt so fresh that one could smell a hit. Two other singles were put out first, but did not grab hold the way All I Wanna Do did.

Backed by a very tasty band of real players, she delivered old fashioned story telling of real poetry. One of the co-writers of the song was poet Wyn Cooper whose poem titled "Fun" was adapted into the song. The song was not going to change the world, but the end result had a little bit of magic that still feels good.

Long before Tuesday Night Music Club was released and launched her career as a solo artist, Crow had paid her musical dues. For many years, she honed her craft as a session and touring vocalist for some of the best of the best, such as Michael Jackson during his Bad world tour. Before that, she had a long list of credits, even doing jingles for major TV commercials, and movie soundtracks record duets with artists like Kenny Loggins. She was a genuine unmanufactured artist long before the success with her first hit song below. GC

Sheryl Crow - All I Wanna Do

Track 3 of the same record was a tasty song titled Strong Enough that will have legs forever for certain people at certain times of their lives.

A Timeless Take of Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli

Below is a beautiful live recording of artists Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli.

The song below is "Time to Say Goodbye", is a song from the albums, "Timeless" (in Europe) and "Time to Say Goodbye" (in N. America), by English soprano and classical-crossover artist Sarah Brightman and Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli. The song itself is a cover version of the original 1995 recording "Con te partirò" by Andrea Bocelli, released as a single and included on his album, "Bocelli, Romanza". The Brightman-Bocelli release was a huge success throughout Europe, reaching #1 in Germany and several other countries. This live version is from Brightman's first full concert recording, "Sarah Brightman: In Concert", from London's Royal Albert Hall with the London Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Paul Bateman. Guest artists include Andrew Lloyd Webber, Adam Clark and Andrea Bocelli. The concert was released to video in 1998. The concert was directed by David Mallet.

Esperanza Spalding and Radio Music Society

This fantastic live concert footage is from the Verucchio Festival in Rimini Italy, where Esperanza Spalding and her project known as Radio Music Society performed the song from Michael Jackson's Off The Wall album titled "I Can't Help It". The song, originally written by Stevie Wonder and Susaye Greene-Browne, is one more deep jazz take by Spalding as she be-bops & scats a 3 minute intro trading with Tia Fuller on sax before breaking into the song with Spalding's angelic voice while simultaneously laying down some very tasty & funky bass lines while backed by an incredible band. This is that "it" thing all around... inspired giftedness at it's finest! GC

Fiona Apple - Hot Knife

From one of the truest eccentric living artists out there, down below is Fiona Apple's latest music video to her song titled Hot Knife, the closing #10 track from her most recent album titled "The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do".

The director is a former Apple flame, Paul David Anderson, who directed other Fiona Apple music videos including "Across the Universe" in 1998, "Fast as You Can" in 1999, as well as the "Limp" and "Paper Bag" music videos in 2000.

True to her authentic form, looking very healthy and in the moment with zeal for her craft, Fiona Apple's beauty shines with her minimalist music arrangement that uses only a drum and sparse piano as she layers her own voice into thick harmonies and a jungle of sound that is all her. Another tasty work of substance by Apple and Anderson destined for classic status amongst us cult followers. GC

Uncle Sam Goddamn

Uncle Sam Goddamn on MusicTelevision.Com

The rapper known as Brother Ali lays it down with glaring reality. It's a public service announcement to not drink the Cool-Aid. His opening words to his now classic song titled Uncle Sam Goddamn: "Welcome to the United Snakes, Home of the thief, Home of the slave..." is how he starts off the beginning of his portrayal of a flawed electorate and the related truths of U.S. Government Policy. He raps down layers of tongue lashings at the government as well as the voter.

Brother Ali borrowed ideas for his own Uncle Sam Goddamn from Nina Simone, making the song sort of a tribute to the late great artist. In fact, there the last second of the video features Ali wearing a Nina Simone t-shirt. Lyrically, her borrowed her line: "A show tune, but the show hasn't been written for it yet." Simone's song titled Mississippi Goddamn was written by her in 1964 as a protest song that was banned in several southern states.

TLC - Creep (The story behind the song and Left Eye's protest)

Huge Congratulations to TLC. Presently, they are running a Kickstarter campaign (click here) that is independently funding their next record. The response has been overwhelmingly successful and there are still many more days before the campaign is over on Thursday, Feb 19 2015 9:00 AM PST.

Just below is a post we made about TLC back on April 12, 2013.  Enjoy!

TLC is Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, rapper Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas

The song Creep by TLC was on the groups CrazySexyCool album and was released as a single on Halloween day of 1994. It earned the group a Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals in 1995. The writer and producer of the song, Dallas Austin, also earned a Grammy nomination for best R&B song.

A interesting story about this song came out in the documentary, The Last Days of Left Eye, devoted to the now deceased member of TLC, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, who very unfortunately died in a car accident in 2002 while driving in Honduras. The car she was driving flipped, threw her from the car and killed her.

In the documentary Left Eye said she was 100% against the release of "Creep" as a single, and threatened to wear black tape over her mouth in the music video. She thought that when a girl finds out that her man is cheating on her, the girl better leave rather than cheat back.

This is a timeless song from a great R&B era. Turn it up and enjoy! GC

Classic John Fogerty

Recorded in 1984 and released in 1985, this original John Fogerty song is off his solo record Centerfold. The song hit and stayed in the #1 spot for three weeks on the Top Rock Tracks chart in Billboard Magazine.

John Fogerty - The Old Man Down The Road

Interesting story about this song is how it turned into a major legal nightmare for a while, with John Fogerty eventually prevailing against the frivolous litigation brought against him and setting a U.S. Supreme Court precedent against the group that brought it. According to Wikipedia:
"Saul Zaentz, owner of Fantasy Records claimed that "The Old Man Down The Road" shared the same chorus as "Run Through The Jungle", a song from Fogerty's days with Creedence Clearwater Revival years before. (Fogerty had relinquished copy and publishing rights of his Creedence songs to Zaentz and Fantasy, in exchange for release from his contractual obligations to same.) Zaentz sued (Fantasy, Inc. v. Fogerty) but the defendant Fogerty ultimately prevailed when he showed that the two songs were whole, separate and distinct compositions. Bringing his guitar to the witness stand, he played excerpts from both songs, demonstrating that many songwriters (himself included) have distinctive styles that can make different compositions sound similar to less discerning ears.
After prevailing as defendant, Fogerty sued Zaentz for the cost of defending himself against the copyright infringement. In such (copyright) cases, prevailing defendants seeking recompense were bound to show that original suit was frivolous or made in bad faith. This case, Fogerty v. Fantasy, Inc., became precedent when the U.S. Supreme Court (1993) overturned lower court rulings and awarded attorneys' fees to Fogerty, without Fogerty having to show that Zaentz's original suit was frivolous."
Bravo to John Fogerty for his legal victory! GC

Lianne La Havas - Live in Concert

Beautifully done live performance by Lianne La Havas for the BBC's 6 Music 10th Anniversary TV special. There is a nice rawness that gets down to who Lianne La Havas is in this performance, that set her apart from her studio recordings as a live artist. After having seen her twice in LA, she is the real deal live. She's not faking it and doesn't need big production. She connects, I believe, because she's been there, through the pain. She has told the story, at live shows I have attended, as well as found online, of her broken heart that drove her to pick up the guitar and write her songs. Her tasty songs are proof that a broken heart is a top fuel of champion songwriters, yet again. GC

It didn't take long before Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and Ian Stewart were joining in on stage and later Buddy Guy and Lefty Dizz also played their part. But the best thing is that I especially love the song while laying back and closing my eyes without the video. It's super fun and tight. My mind goes in a million directions. Ten Years After at Woodstock (1969)

Received Bob Lefsetz' mailbag e-mail this morning and read the letter (down below) from Terry Ellis, co-founder of Chrysalis Records and a producer tied to way too many great records to name including my favorite Jethro Tull album titled Aqualung. Terry wrote to Bob about Alvin Lee who just passed away recently. He referenced Alvin with Ten Years After at Woodstock. Had to revisit this excellent take. Enjoy! GC

Ten Years After - I'm Going Home at Woodstock on August 17th 1969

Band members: Alvin Lee -- guitar, vocals, Leo Lyons -- bass, Ric Lee -- drums, Chick Churchill -- organ

From: Terry Ellis
To: Bob Lefsetz
Subject: Alvin Lee

When Alvin Lee walked on the stage of a small UK blues club in 1967 in his trademark clogs, blonde locks and dramatic good looks and began to play that red Gibson with the peace symbol sticker, fingers flying across the frets, you just knew you were in the presence of a star.

Ultimately millions agreed as Ten Years After stole the show at the UK's Sunbury Jazz and Blues Festival in 1968 and later, as, for many, Alvin became the face of Woodstock after the movie was released in 1970.

Alvin was a warm man, with a ready smile and an easy sense of humor to go with those flying fingers.

As an aspiring musician in England, Alvin entrusted his life and career to two recent University graduates, still wet behind the ears! In doing so, Alvin helped put in place the first building block of a business which became known as Chrysalis.

Chris Wright and I will always be grateful.

Alvin left us far too early and we will miss him,

Chasin The Sun

Susan Calloway
I love artists who can sit down with an instrument and sing their asses off with little or no pomp and circumstance. Susan Calloway delivers that in this most excellent live performance of her original song titled Chasin The Sun. First saw this video below a few years ago and I still love to crank it up regularly and ponder her words that reflect on that dose of reality dreamers with big ideas are faced with as they are often kicked to the curb, but manage to get up again and keep going. Whether one loves the song or not, it's a song with legs that keeps selling and selling and selling in good numbers for any artist, indie or major. She may not yet be a household name in America, but she is organically growing a strong international following by traveling and playing shows around the world. GC

Allen Stone Live

Tasty live performance hosted by Seattle Washington's KEXP radio at an event they hosted in Austin during SXSW last year. This was filmed at Mellow Johnny's, a bike shop owned by Lance Armstrong in Austin.

Allen Stone is one of the baddest live soul performers living. The dude sings his ass off. Look out for Stones latest record being released February 25, 2013. Enjoy! GC

More from Trixie Whitley

MusicLoad, MusicLoad.Com, Trixie Whitley, Fourth Corner

Trixie Whitley's latest album titled "Fourth Corner" was just released. As a big fan of Whitley's essence, I decided to buy the physical CD, a very rare thing for me to do. The CD had sold out on Amazon quickly, but they restocked and I just got mine. Track number 6 titled "Breathe You In My Dreams" was featured here before and I have been raving about it for a while. It's a definite contender for song of the year and video of the year. The song puts her in this league where she practically outshines legends known for these kinds of soulful ballads, like Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston. Trixie shows what kind of pipes she really has, but her pure passion is what is most breathtaking. GC

The entire Fourth Corner record is great! Below is the video to track 4 on the album :)

Cuba Feliz

Below is the French musical-documentary Cuba Feliz, directed by Karim Dridi. It was first released in 2000, but is definitely worth watching if you have not seen it yet. The film follows a 76 year-old Cuban musician known as El Gallo as he travels throughout his country to play music with everyone he can. The doc captured the life of this senior troubadour, and a unique glimpse of life in Cuba, as he connects and bathes in Cuba's rich music culture. Runtime 1 hour 32 minutes. GC

Trixie Whitley

Although Trixie Whitley is associated with some pretty heavy music people and a major label group, she's not manufactured and certainly not hyped. Trixie Whitley walks the walk of the real independent artist. And this song of hers is still amazing, even after 1000 plays :) It's the ultimate song for the just the right film soundtrack. Any music supervisors listening? GC

Trixie Whitley - Breathe You In My Dreams

And this song from the Daniel Lanois project known as Black Dub keeps getting replayed, even though it's been several years since this single camera, no edit film was made. Trixie shines in this and the end of the video is cool when Trixie hops on the second drum kit and starts singing.
