Shara Nova, Gaby Moreno, Cantus Domus - TRY / Tratar de Transformar (Music Video)

Music Television presents Shara Nova, Gaby Moreno, Cantus Domus and the animated music video for TRY: Tratar de Transformar. #GabyMoreno #SharaNova #CantusDomus #TryTratarDeTransformar #MusicVideo #MusicTelevision

Music Television is very pleased to present a long time favorite artist of MusicTelevision.Com and The Indies Network, Gaby Moreno, with her music associates Shara Nova & Cantus Domus and their passionate and uniquely produced & delivered song titled TRY: Tratar de Transformar. The video was animated and directed by Tim Fite.

The artists stated the following about the production:

"TRY / Tratar de Transformar" is a musical piece that combines the ambient vocals of Cantus Domus, an SATB choir from Germany, with the soaring voices of Gaby Moreno, a Grammy winning Guatemalan singer-songwriter, and Shara Nova (My Brightest Diamond), an American multi-instrumentalist and the piece's composer. The song is a response to families separated from each other and being held in detention centers at the US border. The visual accompaniment, a sketch-based animation by artist Tim Fite, heightens the emotional impact of the piece. The illustrations of families grappling with an overbearing police state present a chilling and accessible message of strength in community amid societal terrors.

Composer Shara Nova shares the origins of the work. “Cantus Domus reached out to me as a composer for their online concert series during quarantine and asked if I had any choral music on the subject of the prison system. I had composed a song for choir ‘Tratar de Transformar’ in 2019 when I first began to hear about children being detained and separated from their families or even lost at the border of the US. I was asking myself how can I sit comfortably in my chair while this is happening? The words of this song are the mission statement of many churches, and a Guatemalan church made me first aware of this text. I wanted to put these words into song, so that they might become my own mission statement, words for me to live up to and with which to align my purpose. I felt since that was the origin of the text, I wanted to honor that origin and so I asked my friend Gaby Moreno to be the guest vocalist, and with her powerful contribution the story and meaning of the words becomes even more poignant.

The choir recorded all of their lines individually on their phones, computers, by any means necessary while they were staying inside - we all created the recording remotely, with Gaby and drummer Sebastian Aymanns in Los Angeles, the choir and drummer Earl Harvin based in Berlin and artist Tim Fite in New York City.”

The goal of this work is to bring awareness to the issue by making it more accessible/easier to understand. We also want to raise money for the communities impacted. This will involve a partnership with KIND (Kids In Need of Defense).

Gaby Moreno - Oh Me

MusicTelevision.Com presents Gaby Moreno and her music video to her song titled O, Me

Here is the music video by Gaby Moreno to her sorrowful, yet beautiful song titled O, Me. It is the fourth music video from her fifth album titled Ilusión.

Moreno is a Guatemalan artist who discovered blues and became really inspired by the experience on a trip to New York as a youth. She eventually migrated to America, establishing roots there to pursue a music career. While also maintaining her deep ties to Guatemala and her Latin roots, through her music she has traveled far and wide to become a true citizen of the world. Her repertoire is not limited to blues, pop, latin, jazz or soul, nor does she sing exclusively in Spanish or English. Her music and energy is a very inspired mix of multiple influences. Her early music is timelessly exciting and fresh.

Her live performances, especially the more intimate ones in smaller venues, are well worth seeking out. She is playing all over America and Europe this summer.

Press the play button, choose high-res & full screen and you'll be able sit back and enjoy Gaby's music video automatically followed by several hours of handpicked music videos from different artists to explore. Press forward to skip any video or click the rewind button to replay or return to previous songs. Enjoy!

Gaby Moreno - Love is Gone (Se Apagó) from her Ilúsion album

Music Television presents Gaby Moreno and a song from her album titled Ilusion

It was just over ten years ago in August of 2006 when I heard Gaby Moreno for the first time. She covered Aretha Franklin, but very much with her own style of soul. After following her more closely, I learned she was much more multifaceted than I imagined. Her songs can be in either English, Spanish or mixed Spanglish and she is a true multi genre artist who mixes fusions of Latin, soul, R&B, blues and jazz that goes into a pop direction or dive into classical & folk Spanish styles depending upon her song or the mood that she decides to set.

In August of 2006 right I after I heard her and went out of my way to meet her, I relentlessly called her, not knowing enough about her story, hoping I could help her some how. Her career didn't seem to have broken through yet. There wasn't much information about her on the Internet at the time. I eventually got a return call and spoke to her and learned she had been through the mill, having been through deals with some major label people and things just hadn't clicked, yet. As people in the music industry have always known, one act out of dozens of signings might break through, if they are lucky!

There was something about Gaby that was so special. Not just musically special, but there was a distinct determination that she humbly had. The substance of her music and desire to play a lot of gigs and make more appearances than most acts is what ultimately set her apart from the competition, in my opinion. Her history is not a quick rise to fame story. But it is story of real soul from a unique artist who has worked long and hard to hone her craft and always grow new music that is always different from her last thing.

Her commitment to the craft of writing great songs and also her own excellent ability to curate collaborators, musicians, gear, wardrobe, a vibe and overall sound, has given her the kind of credibility that not all artists have.

After a lot of hard work, in 2013 she was not only nominated, but actually won in the Latin Grammy Award's category for Best New Artist. That was for the Spanish speaking Latin Grammy, which is separate from the English speaking Grammy organization. They are two separate worlds. I had hoped and predicted that after she won the Latin Grammy award, that she would go on to participate in the American or English speaking Grammy Awards. And finally in 2017, she achieved her first ever nomination for the American/English speaking Grammy awards for the Best Latin Pop category for her most recent (and fifth) album titled Ilúsion.

She has amassed and maintained a loyal audience with both her English repertoire and her Spanish repertoire. Some of her fan base may be separate, geographically and language wise, for the most part, but in the case of two of her most recent music videos below, she delivered both an English version and Spanish version of the same song and maybe it will help bridge the gap and bring more Spanish and English speaking fans together. Fans (like me) can actually learn the lyrics in both languages, and thus, use them to help us learn and understand a new language :)

The first video below is in English and titled Love Is Gone. It is one of her songs that goes in a style of pop that seems reminiscent of a stage that Elvis hit for a moment in his career. It features an emerging recording artist named Jonny P. The second video down is the Spanish version titled Se Apagó, which in English means "It turned off" or in this case, Love Is Gone.

Gaby Moreno - Se Apagó (Spanish Version)

The final video below is to a song titled Estaré which was also on Gaby's Ilúsion album. Gaby wrote the following about the song:
Throughout the recording of my album Illusion, was present at my side, my dog Pepper (Peppy) who after a long illness died in Nov. 2015. Thinking about the idea for the new video of this nice song that I composed with my great friend Tommy Torres, brought me memories of her and I wanted to make a tribute by sharing it with you and your pets. Thanks to all who shared their photos and videos. A kiss to the sky to my Peppy and another one for their pets who show us every day unconditional love.

More from Gaby Moreno

MusicTelevision.Com presents Gaby Moreno

Gaby Moreno played two shows in LA and New York to allow fans to preview songs from her September 2016 release of her next album titled Ilúsion. (NOTE: Since this article was originally posted, Ilusion has been released. See videos here)

I was lucky enough to hear about these shows and get tickets for her LA appearance, which was at a venue right on the edge of Downtown Los Angeles' Skid Row. As our Lyft driver got us to the venue, I flashed back almost 30 years when I noticed my old work space where I did music promotion out of at 5th & Towne. Back then I had wondered if Skid Row would ever change. But, the depth of hard times and sadness seems to be just as hard as it ever was, if not harder than it ever seemed, as we drove past piles of trash, tents on the sidewalk and homeless people aimlessly pushing shopping carts. A lot of them looking like they were jonesing. It doesn't seem to me that times have gotten better for the poorest of the poor in LA. In fact, it looks to be worse than ever! More focus is needed to help these people who have somehow landed in this situation.

Around the corner a few blocks away, it has changed. There is an Urth Caffe (a stellar boutique chain of coffee house/restaurants) sitting right next door to beautiful music venue known as Resident. The outdoor food and cocktail court at Resident provides a sweet spot to chat with friends, eat and drink before the show begins inside. This might just be the coolest small music venue in LA, just the right place to see this darling artist named Gaby Moreno.

Gaby's sang songs in English, Spanish and Spanglish. Her group was small with bass, drums, a guitarist and Gaby on vocals and guitar. Her voice is so unique, smokey with her own trademark soul that transcends or combines genres, that it's hard to describe or pigeon hole her as anything except as beautiful.

While there are no recordings available of the new record online yet, it is very well worth digging through her earlier works and live performances such as the recordings below and others we have featured on this network.

This first one is of Gaby sweetly performing in Spanish, the classic Mexican huapango-style song titled Cucurrucucú Paloma. Written about lovesickness, it was originally written by Tomás Méndez in 1954. The title is a reference to the sound of the dove calling.

Gaby Moreno - Cucurrucucú Paloma

The next song below is of Gaby singing one of my favorite songs of her's in English. It's a protest song that she wrote, which is perfect, because Gaby does and always has marched to the beat of her own drum. It's a call to not give in or sell out, keeping fire in the belly and not to let other people paint one blue. It's titled "Sing Me Life".

Gaby Moreno - Live on Tiny Desk Concert

MusicTelevision.Com presents Gaby Moreno

Music Television is pleased to present Gaby Moreno, the fabulous international recording artist and the Latin Grammy winner in the Best New Artist category, Gaby Moreno. At the time of this writing, she has a new album titled Ilúsion coming out soon. She is performing two "Ilúsion Record Preview" shows, one at Resident in Los Angeles on June 14th 2016 (click here for tickets), and another in New York at Joe's Pub on June 16th, 2016 (click here for tickets). A definite to do!.  (NOTE: Since this article was originally posted, Ilusion has been released. See videos here)

Don't let the Latin Grammy win pigeonhole her as a strictly Latin artist. She has a very broad English and Spanish repertoire that crosses genres and eras. She is a wonderful blues, rock and soul artist.

Whilst none of the new material from the Ilúsion album has been released as of yet, just below are some handpicked videos and live performances from previous years.

The first video below is from NPR's Tiny Desk Concert series and it's lovely! She performs three of her songs titled No Regrets, Ave Que Emigra and Sing Me Life. She is accompanied by Adam Levy.

Gaby Moreno - The music films from her album titled Postales

MusicTelevision.Com presents music videos from Gaby Moreno's album titled Postales

Just in case you missed Gaby Moreno's third album titled Postales, which proceeded her Christmas album, just below are the four official films from that record, one being an animation, which led up to her winning the Latin Grammy for Best New Artist. Gaby is not really new to me.  I felt that she was the best new artist around about seven years earlier than the academy, but they got the Best Artist part right.

She has been at it for quite a while, in a way worthy of respect for her ethic and determination. She has paid her dues the old fashioned way.

Whilst these four songs featured below are all in Spanish, and might make you want to learn the language if you don't already know it,  do not pigeon hole Gaby Moreno as a strictly Latin or Spanish singing artist.

Much of her earliest material was in English, and it is fantastic with a timeless quality. She has made some real serious English language ethereal rock, such as with a earlier song of hers titled Bella. And, then she went on to write and record a vast body of blues/rock songs, which were in mostly in English. She will no doubt release more English speaking music as she has done in the past.

It would restore my faith in the music industry if Gaby were to win traditional English language Grammys in the future.  Regardless of awards, Gaby Moreno is one of the most grounded, authentic, uncontrived international artists of substance out there who needs no pomp, pump, slick tricks or smoke & mirrors to make her point.

Please click the play button on the first video, choose the high-resolution & fullscreen option, sit back and enjoy. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th videos as well as other tasty handpicked music videos will continue playing automatically. Enjoy!

A Christmas song by Tim Minchin (Filmed Live)

MusicTelevision.Com presents Tim Minchin

Music Television presents Tim Minchin and his Christmas song titled White Wine In The Sun, filmed live.

Gaby Moreno, the sensational latin recording artist, shared a note with her friends that read: "Last night I saw Tim Minchin performing at Largo. He played this song. Can't tell you how much it moved me..such a beautiful Christmas song from an "non religion" perspective..."

Tim Minchin wrote the following about his song:  "A sentimental song about Christmas. This version is taken from the Australian 'Ready For This?' DVD. As in previous years, all proceeds from the sale of this song during the months of November, December and January will go to the National Autistic Society (NAS)."

Music Television is very pleased to present Gaby Moreno and the music video for her song titled El Primer Noel from her Christmas Album titled Posada. Billboard Magazine's Judy Cantor-Navas dubbed Posada "An Instant Latin Christmas Classic".

This is what Gaby wrote to describe her record:

"Posada" is a collection of traditional Christmas songs, recalling the years when I was a young girl living in Guatemala and singing in my church choir. These are the songs we would sing during the month of December at church on Sundays, at Advent family gatherings and for the traditional Latin American celebration "Las Posadas" which begin on Dec. 16th.

The new "Music Television"

Photograph by Anton Coene
As we hit the end of 2013, we have spent these final weeks planning what 2014 is going to be about.

What is the plan for Music Television exactly?

This channel and it's affilates such as The Indies, MusicLoad, The Quiet Storm, and Classic Music Television is about genuine authentic artists who we have focused on year after year... Artists like Gaby Moreno, who this year was finally recognized as "Best New Artist" when she won that Latin Grammy in 2013. And, this channel is about artists of substance like Nneka, perhaps the closest thing to a modern day living female Bob Marley. And Trixie Whitley, whose song Breathe You In My Dreams should be considered song of the year by any and all music organizations worth a darn. Fantastic organic groups like SHEL is what this company is about. Great pop/rock groups like Saucy Monky and amazing artists like Dom La Nena. And, there is no way I can forget to mention the fabulous Lianne La Havas.... Sorry I can't think of any male artists or groups to plug at this moment. Perhaps this was the year of the great female artists!

Happy New Year!

Nina Simone - Why? (The King of Love is Dead) live in 1968

via one of the greatest living indie artists, Gaby Moreno, I found this beautiful tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Recorded live on April 7, 1968, three days after the death of Martin Luther King, Jr. and performed at the Westbury Music Fair, Nina Simone dedicated her performance to King's memory. The song was written by her bass player, Gene Taylor.

Gaby Moreno - Three great Illustrated Songs, live.

Music Television is very proud to once again present the fabulous singer, songwriter and recording artist, Gaby Moreno.

She plays in everything from full blown electric bands with real horns and strings all the way down to keeping it simple, unplugged and acoustic. She jumps from from English to Spanish songs as she crosses multiple genres with grace and style. No the matter the occasion, she matches it with impeccable versatility.

Below is a very tasty Gaby Moreno performances from a 2011 appearance on NPR Music's Tiny Desk Concert with her friend Adam Levy sitting in on guitar & background vocals with perfection. They perform three of Gaby's originals from her album titled Illustrated Songs.

Each of the three songs are a captivating treat. The final of the three is titled Sing Me Life which is sort of a call to arms to not let outside powers rule ones world. It's terrific down the the last note. The studio version is a worthy listen as is the entire Illustrated Songs album.
